Good, free antivirus programs are rare online. While there are plenty of programs that advertise themselves well, most don't live up to the hype. Zone Alarm's free antivirus and firewall, however, do more than you'd expect. As a combination, they protect your computer well and can be adapted to your usage. The Game Mode, where pop-up notifications are disabled, is one of the best innovations in the industry and something that needs to be standard for all antivirus programs. The quick scanning is wonderful, and you'll quickly find using your antivirus program to be a part of your usual maintenance routine.

That's not to say that the product is perfect, of course. As you'd imagine, some of the features (notably parental controls) are saved for the paid version. The real problem though is that Zone Alarm is very resource intensive. It can bog down older computers easily, and it's enough of a resource hog that it's even going to slow down the boot-up of faster systems. This is not a program to use if you're looking for something lightweight. That's a shame too, because the program seems to otherwise be designed very well.

Zone Alarm is a solid antivirus and firewall, and it's definitely something worth looking at it. If your system can handle the resources used it's one of the better free options on the market. Whether you want to invest in the full package is up to you, but you're assured of solid protection even if you stay with the free version. This is one antivirus combo you can't afford to ignore.
